As a long-time volleyball referee, I love the Pearl whistles. I have 7 different referee whistles and the Fox 40 Pearl is one of the two that I use the most. The Pearl is, in my opinion, more versatile than the original Fox 40 because its tone is not quite as obtrusive. It's a far better choice in a smaller gym. The sound penetrates crowd noise well and is distinct enough to use during tournament play. Because it's not quite as loud as a Fox, it might not be quite as good for a "rescue" device, but I don't think that's what its primary mission is.
If you're buying it as a referee or a coach, get it. If you need an ultra-loud rescue signal, go with a Molten Dolfin, a Storm, or an original Fox 40.

The safety whistle is a great whistle and the sound carries really well. The only problem I had with it is that it takes a bit more air to get any noise than a normal whistle. Otherwise it is great. I would just worry about being out of breathe when I needed it the most.

I purchased this Fox 40 whistle for my husband as he also works as a Non-Skating Official (NSO) for the rising "Womens Roller Derby" Craze! He has always been in the "safety area" of any work he does and you can't misplace it in our roller derby bag. You can find it fast. The Fox 40 also can be heard from a mile away. We tested that at a training class this past year and it can even be heard through two concrete walls, all the doors closed in the heart of an Industrial Ship, shipping area. A GREAT WHISTLE".

This is my daughter's hiking whistle. We use it when we go in the woods and there is any chance she could get separated from us(emergency use if needed). It has great sound and she loves the color. She keeps it around her neck on a matching Fox 40 Pearl with Breakaway Lanyard. It's been great for this purpose.
